4 Popular Assisted Living Myths, Busted

There are many misconceptions surrounding assisted living that can cause seniors and their families to turn away from the option of transitioning to an assisted living community. The stigma usually isn’t true, so we’re here to debunk some of the popular myths of assisted living.

Myth: Assisted living communities and nursing homes are the same thing.

Truth: While they might sound the same or be used interchangeably, the two are not the same. Nursing homes focus on providing more specialized, advanced health care services than an assisted living community. They are typically for people who do not need to be in a hospital but require constant medical care.
On the other hand, assisted living communities provide residents with more freedom and, while they do provide a level of medical care, they are more focused on helping residents with day-to-day activities such as laundry, bathing, food, and transportation.

Myth: Seniors will lose their privacy and independence.

Truth: This is far from the truth! At Streamside, we strive to let our residents be as independent as they want, with the assurance that help is at your fingertips if you ever need assistance. We have multiple floor plan options for private apartments that come unfurnished, so you can bring your favorite chair or wall decor, and really customize your living area however you want. Most activities you can do at your own leisure, but there is also a calendar of activities planned out each month that you can choose to participate in. You really are on your own schedule!

Myth: Residents often feel alone with little socialization opportunities.

Truth: Assisted living communities provide residents with the independence of their own private apartments paired with tons of opportunity for social interaction. Streamside offers a wide variety of social activities, including exercise programs, restaurant-style dinners, arts and crafts, and church services. We consider our residents as a part of our family, and no one wants their family members to feel like they are alone.

Myth: Assisted living is expensive.

Truth: When you factor in all of the services and amenities included in the community, assisted living is actually affordable for most seniors! Streamside also offers month-to-month rent rather than a lease or buy-in, with all utilities except phone included. In this way, you get all the convenience and independence of living in your own home, for a fraction of the cost.

If you have any questions about life at Streamside or assisted living in general, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are happy to help you decide if assisted living is right for you or your loved one!
